Hi, I'm Garrett Xu.
I'm currently at Brown, studying Applied Math. Somewhere along the way, I started spending a lot of my time thinking about AI safety.
I value freedom — to fall in love, raise a family; I value a world that still has room for that. So I'm trying to build my work around whatever will matter most.
Right now, I'm an independent policy researcher thinking about internal deployment risks and frontier AI regulations, supported by a Bluedot Career Transition Grant. I also co-Direct Brown AI Safety.
Previously, I've contributed to METR's Frontier AI Safety Regulation reference for Lab Staff.
Before I started thinking seriously about AI Safety in May—volunteering for Recursive, reading 12 hours a day for the two weeks after, dropping my summer internship, and spending the rest of the summer canvassing in New York and then in Berkeley after—I spent four years in the California legislature helping pass various education, health, and child-safety bills.
On the side, I volunteer for hospice, contribute to dermatology research (out of a promise to a younger, more insecure version of myself), and enjoy Daniel Caesar, Bob Dylan, chest-flies, and pickup basketball.
I want to watch something boring on a Tuesday night and not have it mean anything. I want to be surprised by a good meal. I want Sundays. I haven't always loved the world. But I do now, and I want to stay in it.
