Hi, I'm Garrett Xu.
I'm currently at Brown, studying Applied Math. Somewhere along the way, I started spending a lot of my time thinking about AI safety.
I value freedom — to fall in love, raise a family; I value a world that still has room for that. So I'm trying to build my work around whatever will matter most.
Right now, I'm an external policy researcher for Cal OES projects, helping draft internal deployment risk reporting guidelines for frontier AI developers, and helping run Brown AI Safety (BAIST). Mostly though, I hop on miscellaneous side quests including updating METR's frontier AI regulations reference for lab staff, spending three weeks at 70 hours a week telling New Yorkers how cool Alex Bores is, and picking up burst-capacity work like owning operations, logistics, and distribution for the AI Protest.
Previously, I spent four years in the California legislature helping pass various education, health, and child-safety bills.
On the side, I volunteer for hospice, contribute to dermatology research (out of a promise to a younger, more insecure version of myself), work as an undergraduate Philanthropic Research Fellow, and enjoy Daniel Caesar, Bob Dylan, chest-flies, and pickup basketball.
I want to watch something boring on a Tuesday night and not have it mean anything. I want to be surprised by a good meal. I want Sundays. I haven't always loved the world. But I do now, and I want to stay in it.
